Relays are essentially two parts in one package. The first part is an inductive coil (pins 85 and 86). This coil is the “trigger” function of the relay. By applying both a positive (+) and ground (-) to the contacts, current passes through the coil. When current passes through the coil, a magnetic field is generated and moves the switch (the arrow in the diagram). This is where the second part of the relay comes into play.

The second part of the relay is the “switch.” The switch has three interface contacts—common, normally closed, and normally open. “Normally” refers to the state of the relay not being energized.

While relays can be used for virtually any task, there are some very useful, simple applications for adding LED lighting to a vehicle. Please note that this wiring only pertains to the relay—not the wires in the vehicle. Before interfacing with a wire in a vehicle, always ensure you test the wire with a digital multimeter first to confirm circuit function.

Positive Switching

Positive switching is used for applications where the “trigger” for your switch or circuit is positive. This could be an ignition, brake, or reverse light wire for example.  This could be used for applications such as off-road light bars, work lights, additional brake lights, and other exterior lighting.

Negative Switching

Negative switching is used for applications where the “trigger” for your switch or circuit is negative. Negative triggers are often found in door, hatch, and trunk triggers as well as many interior switches. This could be used for applications such as footwell lighting, truck bed lighting, under-hood lighting, and other interior lighting.

Switch Activated With Ignition Override

This is useful for applications where you want to turn your light on or off with a switch but only want the light to remain on when the car is running or key is in the “ignition” position. The main advantage to this is—even if the switch is left on—the light (or output circuit) will shut off when the key is turned off so that the battery will not be run down.

3. Select a dimmer or controller

For single-color LED strip light setup

Select the power supply large enough to operate the amount of LED strip light you need to use. If you want to control the brightness of your light strips, you will need a Single-color dimmer shown installed with a non-dimmable power supply

For color-changing LED strip light setup

Follow the instructions above for the single-color light strip setup. However, instead of a dimmer, use a RGB color-changing light strip installation

4. Use an LED amplifier for long runs of strip

Depending on the strip chosen and its maximum run (the number of strips that can be installed consecutively before needing amplifiers), you will need to install an light strip interconnect cables. It is best to purchase a length of strip that is more than your application requires. For example, if your project requires 8 1/2 feet of strip, we recommend purchasing 9 feet of strip to ensure that you have everything covered.

What causes electric shock?You can get an electric shock if you touch a grounded surface and hazardous electrical equipment at the same time. The shock happens when the flow of electric current (amperage) from the electrical equipment goes through your body to the ground.  Just a small amount of amperage can hurt or be fatal.

Protecting yourself at work

Your circuit breaker serves the same function that the fuse box once did; it is responsible for the safe distribution of electricity throughout your home. The current is broken up onto different circuits, and each circuit will have a breaker in the box. Certain appliances may be on a designated circuit, while other circuits will cover an area of the home. When the power running to any circuit reaches overload levels, or if there is a fault of any kind on the circuit, the breaker will trip, stemming the flow of electricity until the breaker is reset.

Generally speaking, an overloaded circuit is the cause of a tripped breaker. This prevents overheating on the circuit, and is a very important safety measure. Short circuits are also possible causes, and are more concerning. Essentially, this occurs when a hot wire touches a neutral wire in one of the outlets on the circuit. This can cause a spike in current flow, and can result in overheating of the circuit, which will trigger the breaker to trip. Crossed wires are serious business, so contact us if you suspect that you have any such issues. Ground faults are a third cause, and are similar to short circuits in that a hot wire touches the ground wire within an outlet box. No matter what is causing your breakers to trip, you should schedule professional service if it is a frequent problem.
