Depending on the aptitude, knowledge, and experience of the homeowner, some electrical work can be conducted as a do it yourself project. It’s important to make sure you don’t get in over your head as an improper electric job can be a nuisance at best or a safety issue at worse, and it nearly always costs more to fix a botched job than to hire a professional to conduct it properly in the first place. Another mistake people make is to have a carpenter or painter who is already working at the house conduct electric work. You would be right to think they probably know how to do light electric work, but because it isn’t legal you have no protection against any damage they cause and your insurance may not recognize a claim made based on unlicensed work.

One of the first things to consider when remodeling an older home is whether your existing electrical system is equipped to handle the load that new appliances will place on it. You’ll also need to think about the effect of adding square footage and new lighting on your system. You may need a heavy up before you even start your remodel, which can add unexpected costs.

The most cost-effective thing to do before remodeling your home or constructing a new addition is establish an electrical wiring diagram early during the design phase (or better yet, call Kolb Electric and have us do this for you!). Don’t forget the outside of your home. Since you’re already upgrading your electrical system, now would be a good time to get your home electrical system ready to handle some outside tasks. These include outside perimeter lighting, fire and burglar alarm systems, motion-controlled lighting, and card access systems.

Did you see the news Friday about Des Moines south side homes without power?  More than 7,000 residential customers were without power.  The week before this occurred we installed a whole house generator in a home in the affected area.  When the power went out the Kohler generator we installed kicked on and powered up the entire home.  The whole house generator ran continuously for most of the day while its residence who were home at the time worked and continued there daily routine without power interruption.

2. Ghosts in the yard.

If you have handy lights lining a path or driveway at your house, this idea will take no time at all. You just need to collect a bunch of old plastic milk jugs with the tops cut off or white paper bags (I suggest making the decision after you get the weather report for All Hallows’ Eve). Here’s an ultra affordable Halloween lighting project, if your preferred poison is the frightening beyond of unexplained extraterrestrial phenomena. Just fill your house (or yard) full of anchored helium balloons containing green glow sticks. Add faces with traditional alien eyes or something even more creative! If you really want to play it up, you and your family could dress up like extraterrestrials and pretend the real you has been abducted.

4. Mini mummies.

If you prefer cute décor over the more macabre, a quick project to make mini mummy candles holders only requires a jar or glass cup, some white gauze, and some googly eyes. Simply scrunch up the gauze around the jar to look like the mummy’s linen wrappings. Add the eyes, and ta-da, you’ve got a precious little mummy come back to life with candlelight. They’re a crowd pleaser, trust me.
