The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), National Electric Code (NEC) 70, defines hazardous locations through a system of classes, divisions or zones, and groups that products must be labeled as to be used in those areas. Hazardous area classifications are based on the general type of substance or material that is present in the area, the likelihood that it exists, and more detailed specifics, such as ignition temperatures and combustible properties.

Class I:

A Class I hazardous location contains flammable gas, liquid-produced vapors, or combustible liquid-produced vapors that can be present in quantities large enough to create an explosion.

Typical locations include airplane hangars, vehicle paint shops, commercial laundromats, and gas plants.

Class III:

This type of location contains easily ignitable fibers or flyings in the air but that aren’t likely to be in suspension in amounts large enough to cause an explosion.

Typical locations include textile mills, cotton mills, and sawmill facilities.

How to choose LED lamps. The replacement of lamps in an existing lighting system is connected to a lot of doubts when concerning the replacement of the lamp type. Changing the lamp type is a conventional process. The invention of the CFL lamp in the 90’s allowed users to save energy by replacing their energy consuming incandescent lamps. A lot of labels and graphics on the products packages show the replacing types. There are numerous possible influences on a lighting solution. Changing the lamp is changing the most important factor, the lighting quality. Lamps define the light color, color rendering index, luminous flux (light output or brightness) and installed load.

Changing lamps is nothing else than comparing the features of the old system, characteristics like light color, color rendering index and luminous flux should stay the same, suggested the former illumination has been satisfying. Watch the luminous flux (measured in lumen) and compare them to the already installed one and choose an appropriate lamp. Here is an example which luminous flux (lumens are abbreviated by lm) can be replaced by which lamps:

Don’t get confused by all the lighting features from the labels or packages. Concentrate on the characteristics like light color and color rendering index, they should be the same or at least similar. Choose the lamp according to luminous flux in lumens. “Placing a chandelier that is too small in a space is likely the biggest mistake because it’s very noticeable,” says Joe Rey-Barreau, educational consultant for the American Lighting Association (ALA) and assistant professor of interior design at the University of Kentucky. “Great designers, therefore, tend to make their decisions on fixtures that may appear slightly larger than might be appropriate. It’s generally always best to make the mistake on a fixture being too big than too small.”

To commemorate our fifteenth year, we are taking a look back at what life was like 15 years ago. Do you remember May 1999? It was a month of ups and downs. 1. Bluetooth Is Announced

Early in the month, for about six days, 152 tornadoes ravaged the mid-west and eastern U.S. It was the worst in Oklahoma, with one F5 tornado – the second strongest recorded in U.S. history – that caused $1 billion in damage.

In Milan, Italy, after 22 years of restoration work, Leonardo da Vinci’s newly-restored masterpiece The Last Supper was put back on display. This is an unforgettable moment in art history.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 11,000 for the first time in its history at 11,014.70. Many speculate in hindsight that this bump was actually artificially created by overlending and that in retrospect this was a warning sign for the future recession. It was a cause for celebration then: Now, it’s something from which we have hopefully learned a lesson.
